Reliable Backflow Protection
Why Recertify Every Year?
Mid-West Instrument recommends annual accuracy testing for backflow test kits. Several important reasons support this practice:
- Backflow prevention assemblies are mechanical devices that require annual testing to ensure proper operation. Similarly, backflow test kits are mechanical devices and should be maintained and treated with the same care.
- The performance of backflow prevention assemblies can degrade over time due to the quality of water they are exposed to. Backflow test kits are subjected to the same conditions and can experience similar wear.
- Testing of backflow prevention assemblies must be performed by certified backflow technicians to ensure accuracy. Using a test kit of unknown accuracy is equivalent to having an untrained person perform the test, which can compromise results.
- It is standard industry practice that all measuring tools, including calibration standards, undergo regular accuracy checks. As a manufacturer with a third-party certified quality system, we ensure that no calibration interval exceeds 12 months, guaranteeing that all of our measuring tools, including calibration standards, remain accurate and reliable.
Having the accuracy checked on an annual basis does not mean that the test kit must be torn down, disassembled, or rebuilt. The test kit should be checked for accuracy, and if found within tolerance, passed as suitable use for another year. The test kit should only be calibrated or adjusted if it is found to be outside of the accuracy tolerance. Should a test kit be found to be out of tolerance, it should only be adjusted by a trained and authorized service center.
It is our position that in order to protect our drinking water from cross-connections and backflow, backflow prevention assemblies must be properly installed, tested annually by trained and certified backflow technicians, and tested with backflow test kits of known accuracy as determined by annual accuracy verification.
